CREP and RIM

Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program
Reinvest In Minnesota

SOUTHWEST MN CREP

CREP II is a partnership between the federal and state governments.

Minnesota’s contribution of about $50 million will leverage about $200 million in federal dollars. This program focuses on critical watershed areas as well as

marginal cropland. There are 18,000 acres eligible in Southwest Minnesota.

CREP II can be best described as a long term (45 years) or permanent easement in which the landowner can receive compensation for placing eligible land into a conservation program.

In Nobles County landowners may receive between $2,600 and $4,100 per acre over the length of the contract, depending on the conservation practice, location in the county and the soil types on the property.

Reinvest In Minnesota

The Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) Reserve Program, one of the first such programs of its kind in the country, began in 1986 and is managed at the state level by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. It protects and improves water quality, reduces soil erosion, and enhances fish and wildlife habitat by retiring private marginal cropland from agricultural production, planting permanent native vegetation, and restoring previously drained wetlands. Other benefits include flood control and groundwater recharge.

Landowners eligible for the RIM program will receive a one-time payment from the State of Minnesota for placing the eligible property in a permanent conservation program. Landowners maintain ownership rights not associated with the conservation program.
